Why a CPP is so Important

The NCM Child Protection Policy

Children are a gift from God. They are very valuable to God and have a special place in His heart. It can be seen in the words of Jesus in Matthew 18:5, where He says: “Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.” And God’s word instructs us in Matthew 18:10, “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.” Children need to be protected and sheltered in order to grow as healthy, flourishing citizens and children of God.

In its endeavor to live its mission statement, to “clothe, shelter, feed, heal, educate, and live in solidarity with those who suffer under oppression, injustice, violence, poverty, hunger, and disease”, Nazarene Compassionate Ministries (NCM) in partnership with local Nazarene churches worldwide develop programs and projects to reach out to the children with their families and communities.

In order to provide a firm structure to the ministries, NCM has developed a Child Protection Policy, which plays a significant role in setting the standard to ensure that every  child is safe from harm, both intentional and unintentional, and to prevent him or her from suffering from any or further harm by supporting the strengths and by addressing the vulnerabilities and risk factors within the ministry premises. In the same way, the child protection policy helps set the structure to guide the children’s workers in their approach and behavior, and to provide a foundation that will prevent malpractice, unwise or careless behaviors, accusations and allegations. Another important function of the policy is helping the child to be aware of his rights and responsibilities.

The Child Protection Policy is a very important part of the NCM Holistic Child Development Manual.  It consists of guidelines and procedures that are meant to direct the interactions of Nazarene Compassionate Ministry staff, workers, partners, sponsors and other visitors with the children registered in NCM-supported programs. For this reason, NCM wants every person who is related to the child within the ministry context to be informed about the policy, and to be an advocating agent for issues related to the details it entails.

With this in mind, NCM has now designed the child protection policy in a large format to be displayed in every Child Development Center and Sunday School room, wherever we work and interact with children. All Child Development Centers and Nazarene churches publicly display the policy as a way of making it known to everyone who is related to the church, the CDC, and the child. NCM also promotes trainings and seminars that will help the workers and congregations to apply efficiently the policy for the ultimate welfare of the child.
